They are reasonably hardy and easy to care for.

Where are they from?
They originate from Rio Negro and Amazon Rivers in Guyana.
 
How many can I keep?
They will do best in shoals of 5 or more.
 
What are the ideal water conditions?
Ideal water conditions are soft acidic water but they will adapt to a wide range of water parameters. Temperature 20-25c. PH 5-7.
 
What do you feed them?
They will eat a variety of foods. Feed a varied diet of frozen, freeze dried and flake foods.
 
How compatible is it with other fish?
The Golden Pencil is a community fish and can go with other peaceful community fish. See tank mates.
 
How do you breed them?
Males are thinner than females and have a red lower caudal and anal fin. To breed them you will require a breeding tank with soft acidic water PH 5.5-6. A mature female in breeding condition should be placed in the tank 2 or 3 days before the male. Use a layer of marbles to protect the eggs and up to 200 fry will hatch after 48 hours. Feed on newly hatched brine shrimp.
