How hard are they to keep?
We would class this fish as a moderate care level.
What is its maximum size?
Males around 11cm and females 10cm. Mature males are a brighter blue than females, there is almost no colour difference between juveniles.
Where are they from?
Originates from Lake Malawi, Molambique coast.
What are the ideal water conditions?
Ideal water conditions are moderately hard with a temperature of 22-28°c. PH 7.5-8.8.
What do you feed them?
Feed plenty of algae based foods including flake and pellets.
How compatible is it with other fish?
One of the more peaceful Pseudotropheus species but aggressive when spawning. Keep with other peaceful mbunas.
How do you breed them?
Provide a water temperature of 26-28°c and a PH of 8-8.8. These cichlids are easy to breed, keep 3 or 4 females to one male. Up to 50-60 eggs are laid and the females will brood the eggs for approximately 20-24 days. Feed fry on newly hatched brine shrimp and daphnia.
There is almost no colour difference between male and female until they matyre when the male will display a bright blue almost white colour. The females are a more drab blue. The egg spots on the male anal fin tend to be sharper and more defined although this is not always a accurate way of defining the gender.
