Where are they from?
The Ruby Barb originates from Sri Lanka. Today all the fish available are tank bred. This hardy barb can be susceptible to white spot but fortunately responds well to treatment. How many can I keep?
Best in groups of 4 or more.
What are the ideal water conditions?
Ideal water conditions are acidic to neutral soft water. Temperature 20-26c. PH 5.5 – 7.
What do you feed them?
They are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods. Feed a varied diet of frozen, freeze dried and flake foods.
How compatible is it with other fish?
A boisterious fish that needs to be kept with other fish of a similar nature or larger robust fish.
How do you breed them?
In adult fish the male is much darker with the head a deep ruby red colour. The Ruby Barb is an egg scatterer that spawns adhesive eggs amongst plants. Remove parents after spawning and feed fry on infusoria and newly hatched brineshrimp.
