A typical day at ATYD.......

Synopsis: Last tuesday really summed up what it is like to work in the fish industry..

Typically I will start around 7-30, organising the orders and paperwork required to send out the days fish and dry good orders. Being a bank holiday week means it was always likely to be busy... And busy it was, we sent out over 50 boxes, it felt like we spent the entire day catching and bagging fish. I guess we pretty much did!
We also run a retail shop from the same site so as pleased as we are to see customers this obviously slows down the fish catching!

We have a fairly set system, Dave and Steve will be putting up the tropical and marine order whilst I juggle the Koi/coldwater orders with answering the phone. Our order cut off point is 2pm so usually we will be finished putting up orders by 2-30.

We then begin feeling which is no small task given that we have over 600 tanks to feed! With so many varieties of fish we have to use around 15 different foods. This is thw time of day we tend to do any maintanence as well, again with so many tanks and pponds it a must to keep up with.

Most weeks come 4-30 the finishing line is in site, only half an hour to go, well not today. We have 2 shipments arriving today and they have been delayed. By 4 hours.
By the time they eventually arrive it is 8-45 and we have 300 individually bagged 'L' number plecos to release along with Piranha, Cardinels and 4 boxes of Koi and grass carp. We are finally complete around 10-30, pretty tired but pleased to see that despite the delay the fish have arrived in fantastic condition.

Theres not much you can do when a shipment is delayed, made us all a bit grumpy come the following morning though! Forgot to mention I have a teething 1 year old. As many of you will know, this is not a recipe for a good nights sleep!

Hopefully this gives you an insight into the kind of day that we usually have hear at ATYD and hopefully you'll forgive me if the next time we have a delayed shipment I'm a touch tired on the phone the following morning!

Best wishes

Mike
