Where is its origin and where is it exported from?
The Longhorn Cowfish originates from the Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to Japan, Indonesia, Australia and the Pacific Islands. It is commonly exported for the aquarium trade from countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines.
Is it reef compatible?
With caution. It is not considered completely reef safe, as it may eat ornamental shrimp, crabs, molluscs and other small invertebrates. It may also disturb or nip certain corals, so it is generally better suited to a carefully planned fish-only aquarium.
What should I feed it?
Feed a varied omnivorous diet consisting of chopped prawns, mysis shrimp, krill, squid, mussels and other marine seafood. Supplement with quality marine pellets and algae-based foods. Feed small portions regularly and ensure it is eating reliably, as some individuals can be fussy feeders.
How many can I keep?
Best kept singly in most home aquariums. Longhorn Cowfish are generally best housed individually because of their adult size and specialised care requirements.
How compatible is it with other fish?
Generally peaceful and relatively slow-moving, making it vulnerable to aggressive or fast-feeding tankmates. It is best kept with peaceful fish that will not bully it or outcompete it for food. Avoid aggressive predators and fin-nipping species.
