What is its maximum size?
Typically grows to approximately 5 cm, including its legs, depending on the size of the shell it occupies.
Where is its origin and where is it exported from?
The Electric Blue Hermit Crab originates from the Indo-Pacific, including areas around Indonesia, the Philippines, Fiji and other tropical Pacific islands. It is commonly exported for the aquarium trade from countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines.
Is it reef compatible?
Generally reef compatible, with caution. It is an active algae grazer and scavenger that helps clean rockwork and aquarium surfaces. However, it may occasionally disturb loose coral frags, compete with snails for shells or prey on small, weakened invertebrates if food is scarce.
What should I feed it?
Feed a varied diet of marine algae, seaweed, spirulina-based foods and algae wafers, supplemented with small amounts of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp and finely chopped seafood. It will also scavenge leftover food and graze on algae growing naturally in the aquarium.
How many can I keep?
Can be kept singly or in small groups in a suitably sized aquarium. Ensure there is enough food, plenty of hiding places and a selection of appropriately sized empty shells to reduce competition.
How compatible is it with other fish?
Generally peaceful with most reef fish and corals. However, it may be eaten by predatory fish such as triggerfish, pufferfish and larger wrasses. It can also compete with snails for shells, so provide spare shells and monitor interactions.
