How hard are they to keep?
We would class Schismatogobius saurii as a moderate care level fish. They are best suited to aquarists who can provide excellent water quality, good oxygenation and a sandy substrate that allows them to display their natural sifting behaviour.
What is its maximum size?
Schismatogobius saurii typically grows to around 4–5cm in length.
Where are they from?
They originate from freshwater streams in Southeast Asia, where they inhabit clear, flowing waters with sandy or fine gravel substrates.
What are the ideal water conditions?
Ideal water conditions are a temperature of 22–27°C, with a pH of around 6.5–7.5. They appreciate clean, well-oxygenated water with a gentle to moderate current and a sandy substrate. Regular maintenance and stable water parameters are important for their long-term health.
What do you feed them?
Schismatogobius saurii is a small bottom-dwelling fish that feeds primarily on tiny aquatic invertebrates. Offer a varied diet of small frozen or live foods, such as bloodworms, daphnia, and baby brine shrimp. Small, sinking foods are ideal, as they spend most of their time near the substrate. Ensure they receive enough food, particularly when housed with more active tank mates.
How compatible are they with other fish?
They are generally peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish that enjoy similar water conditions. Avoid large or boisterous tank mates that may outcompete them for food. Provide plenty of open sandy areas and small hiding places, and monitor interactions between males, as some territorial behaviour may occur.
