What is its maximum size?
The Yellow Clown Goby grows to approximately 3–3.5 cm (1.2–1.4 inches) in length. It is a small, peaceful marine fish known for its bright yellow coloration and distinctive habit of perching among coral branches. Despite its tiny size, it benefits from a mature, stable aquarium with plenty of hiding places and suitable feeding opportunities.
Where is its origin and where is it exported from?
The Yellow Clown Goby originates from the tropical Indo-Pacific region, including areas around Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and the Great Barrier Reef. It is commonly found inhabiting shallow coral reefs and lagoons, where it perches among branching corals, particularly Acropora species.
Specimens entering the aquarium trade are commonly exported from countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines, depending on collection locations and supply sources.
Is it reef compatible?
Yes, the Yellow Clown Goby is generally considered reef compatible with caution. It is popular in reef aquariums due to its small size, peaceful temperament and bright yellow colouration.
However, it naturally associates with branching corals, particularly Acropora, and may nip at coral tissue or irritate coral polyps, especially when establishing a territory or breeding. This behaviour can cause problems in aquariums containing delicate or valuable small-polyp stony corals (SPS).
It is generally best suited to reef aquariums where its interaction with corals can be monitored, particularly if sensitive SPS corals are present.
What should I feed it?
Feed a varied diet of small meaty foods, including enriched frozen brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, copepods and other appropriately sized marine foods. High-quality small marine pellets and finely sized frozen preparations may also be accepted.
Because of its tiny mouth, offer small food particles and ensure that food reaches the areas where it perches. Newly introduced specimens can be shy and may struggle to compete with larger, faster fish, so target feeding may be necessary.
Feed small portions once or twice daily, adjusting the amount according to its appetite and body condition. Maintaining a consistent feeding routine is particularly important, as some individuals can be reluctant to accept prepared foods initially.
How many can I keep?
The Yellow Clown Goby can be kept singly or, in a suitably sized aquarium, as a compatible pair. It may become territorial towards other clown gobies, particularly around preferred coral branches or breeding sites.
Multiple individuals require sufficient space, hiding places and suitable territories. Aggression should be monitored, especially in smaller aquariums where fish have limited opportunities to establish separate areas.
Pairs may form and breed in captivity. However, introducing several individuals into a small aquarium can lead to territorial disputes, so keeping a single specimen is often the simplest option.
How compatible is it with other fish?
The Yellow Clown Goby is generally peaceful and suitable for community reef aquariums containing other small, non-aggressive marine fish. Suitable tank mates may include clownfish, firefish, small gobies and peaceful wrasses, provided the aquarium is appropriately stocked.
Avoid large predatory fish and aggressive species that may intimidate, outcompete or eat this tiny goby. Care should also be taken with fast-feeding tank mates, as the Yellow Clown Goby may struggle to compete for food.
Its small size and relatively sedentary behaviour make it particularly well suited to peaceful reef communities rather than aquariums containing boisterous or highly competitive fish.

General care recommendations
The Yellow Clown Goby is an attractive, manageable species for peaceful marine and reef aquariums. Its small adult size makes it suitable for smaller established marine systems, provided water quality remains stable and its nutritional needs are met.
Provide plenty of suitable perching places, a mature aquarium and a reliable supply of appropriately sized foods. Although it is generally peaceful, its association with branching corals means that coral health should be monitored carefully, particularly in SPS-dominated reef systems.
