How many can I keep?
Best kept as a minimum of one pair. Once adults pair off they usually stay faithful to each other.
What are the ideal water conditions?
Ideal conditions are acidic to neutral, soft to medium water. Rams like plenty of hiding places between roots,stones or plants. Although all the fish available are farm bred they will do better in soft acidic water and should only be added to a mature set-up.
What do you feed them?
Best to feed a variety of foods. Feed a varied diet of frozen, freeze dried, flake and cichlid pellets.
How compatible is it with other fish?
A peaceful community fish.
How do you breed them?
When selecting a pair, look for two fish trying to stay close to each other, once two fish have paired off this is normal behaviour. Mature males are slightly bigger and have a taller dorsal fin. Condition adults by feeding live foods. Place a pair in a separate breeding tank. After elaberate courtship where both fish will spread their fins, aprox 200 eggs will be laid. Eggs take 3 days to hatch, fry will be free swimming 3 or 4 days later. Feed fry on infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp. Parents will both share the rearing of the fry.
