On this page you will find OATA guides to caring for fish species.

Each page will give you advice on caring for the fish species and acclimitising.

Acclimiting Aquarium Fish– One you receive your aquarium fish you should float the bag in the tank. Switch off all aquarium lights while doing so. Float the bag to adjust the water temperature in the bag to the same as the aquarium water. After 10 minutes slowly add small amounts of aquarium water to the bag for up to 20 minutes ensuring the bag is kept open while doing so. Then release the fish into the aquarium, try to add as least about as bag water as possible when doing so. Leave the lights off while the fish adjust to their new surroundings. Always monitor the fish and water quality over the next few weeks.

Acclimiting Pond Fish- Once you receive your fish if it is not sunny, you should float the bad on the pond to adjust the water temperature in the bag. After 10 minutes slowly add small amounts of pond water to the bag for up to 20 minutes ensuring the bag is kept open while doing so. Then release the fish, try to add as least about as bag water as possible when doing so. Please note if it is sunny and you have no shade, the fish will get too stressed during this process. In these weather conditions to avoid the fish getting too hot they should not be floated.
