Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) Also known as White Amur-
Grass Carp are fast becoming a popular fish addition to the garden pond. Introduced to the UK to control weeds in Garden Ponds, they are a herbivorous freshwater fish from Eastern Asia. They have long torpedo shaped bodies with broad rounded heads. There are two varieties stocked the green grass carp and the albino variety.
Grass Carp prefer to eat the softer weeds and will help control Blanket weed, Duck weed, Elodea and many other invasive plants. They will live happily along side other ornamental coldwater fish, making them ideal for natural weed control in ponds.
In the wild they they naturally spawn in rivers with fast moving water. Due to their specific spawning requirements they will not reproduce in this country.
They are available in a large range of sizes and we are happy to advise on how many you would require to help control the weeds in your garden pond.
