The frame surrounding a fish's photograph is our quick guide to how it behaves in a tank with others. It is a starting point, not a promise: every fish is an individual, and size, tank space and how many you keep all make a difference. If you are not sure, ring us and we will talk it through.
Passive Community (Blue)
Peaceful fish that get on with most other fish of a similar size. These are the backbone of a community tank, and a good place to start if you are new to fishkeeping.
Boisterous Community (Green)
Lively, active fish that still suit a community tank, but can be pushy at feeding time or nip at long fins. Keep them with fish of a similar size and pace, and think twice about slow, long-finned tank mates.
With Caution (Orange)
Fish that are usually fine but can surprise you. Some grow large enough to eat much smaller tank mates, and some become territorial as they mature. Read the notes on the fish's own page, or ask us, before adding one to an established tank.
Aggressive (Red)
Territorial or predatory fish that are best kept on their own, in a species tank, or with tank mates chosen with them in mind. Ask us and we will help you plan the tank before you buy.
Saltwater (Yellow)
Marine fish for a saltwater aquarium. They cannot live in fresh water, whatever their temperament, so check your setup before you order.
