About this fish
Chaetodon madagaskariensisMadagascar Buttlerflyfish/ Pearlscale ButterflyfishWhat is its maximum size?
The Madagascar Butterflyfish grows to approximately 13–14 cm (5–5.5 inches) in length.
Where is its origin?
The Pearlscale Butterflyfish originates from the Indian Ocean.
Is it reef compatible?
Not considered reef safe
The Pearlscale Butterflyfish is not recommended for most reef aquariums containing desirable corals and ornamental invertebrates.
In the wild, it feeds on coral polyps and other small reef organisms. In captivity, it may nip at or consume a variety of corals and invertebrates.
What should I feed it?
The Pearlscale Butterflyfish is an omnivore that naturally feeds on coral polyps, small benthic invertebrates, worms, crustaceans and some algae.
Offer a varied selection of foods, including:
Frozen mysis shrimp.
Enriched brine shrimp.
Finely chopped mussel and clam.
Spirulina-based flakes and pellets.
Dried marine seaweed.
How many can I keep?
Generally best kept singly in most home aquariums.
They may become aggressive towards other butterflyfish, particularly those with similar body shapes, colour patterns or feeding habits.
How compatible is it with other fish?
Is generally peaceful towards unrelated fish species, making it suitable for many established fish-only marine aquariums.
Care should be taken when keeping it with other butterflyfish, as territorial behaviour can develop, particularly between similar-looking species.
It is best introduced into an established aquarium with plenty of live rock, open swimming space and suitable hiding places.
A peaceful environment is particularly important during acclimatisation, as newly introduced butterflyfish can be sensitive to competition and stress.
