About this fish
Nemateleotris decora
What is its maximum size? The Firefish Goby grows to approximately 8–9 cm (3–3.5 inches) in length.
Where is its origin and where is it exported from?
The Firefish Goby originates from the Indo-Pacific region.
Is it reef compatible?
Yes.
One important consideration is that Firefish are notorious jumpers, particularly when startled or chased. A tightly fitting aquarium lid or mesh cover is essential to prevent them from jumping out.
What should I feed it?
The Firefish Goby is primarily a carnivorous planktivore, naturally feeding on zooplankton, copepods and small crustacean larvae drifting in the water column.
Offer a varied diet consisting of:
- Frozen mysis shrimp.
- Enriched brine shrimp.
- Quality small marine pellets.
- High-quality marine flakes
How many can I keep?
The Firefish Goby is generally best kept singly or as a compatible, established pair.
How compatible is it with other fish?
The Firefish Goby is a very peaceful species and is well suited to community marine and reef aquariums.
It is generally compatible with clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinalfish, peaceful wrasses and other non-aggressive reef fish.
Due to its timid nature, it should not be housed with aggressive or overly boisterous fish that may intimidate it or prevent it from feeding.
It is best introduced into a peaceful, established aquarium with compatible tank mates.
