About this fish

Sand Sifting Starfish
What is its maximum size?

The Sand Sifting Starfish can grow to approximately 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) across.

Where is its origin?

The Sand Sifting Starfish is found throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including areas around Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Australia and various Pacific islands.

Is it reef compatible?

Yes, with caution. The Sand Sifting Starfish is generally considered coral safe and will not normally damage soft corals, LPS corals or SPS corals.

What should I feed it?

The Sand Sifting Starfish is primarily a scavenger and predator of small organisms living within the substrate.

In the wild, it feeds on organic material, microorganisms, small crustaceans and other sand-dwelling invertebrates.

In the aquarium, its natural food supply should come primarily from a mature, established sand bed.

You can supplement its diet with:

    Finely chopped prawns and shrimp.

    Chopped mussel and clam.

    Frozen mysis shrimp.

How many can I keep?

The Sand Sifting Starfish is generally peaceful and can sometimes be kept alongside other compatible sea stars.

However, keeping multiple specimens is not recommended for most home aquariums.

Each individual requires a substantial amount of established sand bed containing sufficient natural food.
