About this fish

How hard are they to keep?

We would class Tylomelania patriarchalis as a moderate care level snail. They are relatively straightforward to care for when their water conditions are stable, but they require warm, mineral-rich water to maintain a healthy shell.

What is its maximum size?

They can grow to around 8–10cm in length, making them one of the larger freshwater aquarium snails.

Where are they from?

Tylomelania patriarchalis, commonly known as the Patriarch Rabbit Snail, originates from Sulawesi, Indonesia, where Tylomelania snails inhabit freshwater lakes and surrounding aquatic habitats.

What are the ideal water conditions?

Ideal water conditions are a temperature of 26–30°C, with a pH of around 7.5–8.5. They prefer moderately hard to hard water with sufficient calcium and minerals to support healthy shell growth. Maintain excellent water quality and avoid sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry.

What do you feed them?

They are omnivorous scavengers that feed on algae, biofilm and decaying organic matter. Supplement their natural grazing with sinking algae wafers, quality invertebrate pellets and blanched vegetables such as courgette and spinach. Ensure they receive enough food, particularly in newer aquariums with limited natural algae and biofilm.

How compatible are they with other fish?

Tylomelania patriarchalis is generally peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful fish and invertebrates that tolerate warm, mineral-rich water. Avoid pufferfish, snail-eating loaches, large predatory fish and aggressive tank mates that may damage or prey on them. They can also be kept with other suitable snails, provided there is enough space and food for everyone.

If it does not arrive alive, you do not pay for it.

Photograph the bag unopened, send it to us within four hours of delivery, and we will put it right with a refund or a replacement.* The health guarantee then covers you for a further ten days once it is in your tank.

*Whether we refund or replace is our decision and depends on the fish and its cost. A replacement may travel with a future order rather than straight away.
