About this fish

-Where is its origin and where is it exported from?

The Yellow Boxfish originates from the Indo-Pacific, including areas around East Africa, the Red Sea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan and northern Australia. It is commonly exported for the aquarium trade from countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines.

 Is it reef compatible?

With caution. It may eat small crustaceans, worms and other invertebrates, and it may disturb certain corals. It is generally better suited to a fish-only aquarium, although compatibility varies between individuals.

What should I feed it?

Feed a varied omnivorous diet consisting of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped prawns, squid, mussels and other marine seafood. Supplement with quality marine pellets and algae-based foods. Offer small portions regularly and ensure it receives enough food without being outcompeted by faster tankmates.

 How many can I keep?

Best kept singly in most home aquariums. Yellow Boxfish grow large and require substantial swimming space, so keeping multiple adults is generally unsuitable for typical home aquariums.

How compatible is it with other fish?

Generally peaceful but slow-moving, making it vulnerable to aggressive fish and fin-nippers. Choose peaceful tankmates that will not bully it or compete too strongly for food. Avoid aggressive predators and fish likely to harass it.

Water parameters

  • Temperature: 24–28°C

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Specific gravity (salinity): 1.020–1.025

  • Ammonia and nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Nitrate: Keep as low as practical through good filtration and regular water changes.

Important: Like other boxfish, the Yellow Boxfish can release toxins into the water when severely stressed or threatened. This can be fatal to other aquarium inhabitants. Maintain excellent water quality, minimise stress and avoid housing it with aggressive tankmates.

If it does not arrive alive, you do not pay for it.

Photograph the bag unopened, send it to us within four hours of delivery, and we will put it right with a refund or a replacement.* The health guarantee then covers you for a further ten days once it is in your tank.

*Whether we refund or replace is our decision and depends on the fish and its cost. A replacement may travel with a future order rather than straight away.
